What is the most frequently asked Q&A about RTK?

RoboUP - 2024/01/05

Q1 Why is the location of the charging station so important?

The GPS data of the mower is not only from the RTK base station but also from the built-in GPS module in the mower. Before the mower goes out to map, if the charging station is located in a place where it is hard for the mower to detect accurate GPS data, it may possibly cause the whole map to fail to be set up on the basis of the accurate data.

We totally know how it will be inconvenient for our users to set everything up if it is really hard to have a proper location. So now we are working on other technology solutions to compensate for this situation to make sure the mower can still perform well without an accurate GPS signal.

Q2 Why are the number of satellites acquired by the mower and the RTK base station at the same location inconsistent?

The design structure of the mower and the RTK base station is different, so placing the mower on the charging base station would interfere with the GPS signal of the RTK Base station. So if the satellites that the RTK base station detects are not enough, we would recommend installing the RTK base station in a higher place.

Q3 If the mower slides down the slope and just slides out of the boundary, will it not be able to find the path back to the station?

If it goes out of bounds when mowing the grass, it will try to return to the bounds. If it cannot return to the bounds in 3 minutes, it will judge the confidence level of the current position. If the confidence level is low, it will report out of bounds.

(This will be optimized in the future. If it goes out of bounds by more than 1 meter and is not on the lawn, it will stop and report an error to prevent the mower from falsely reporting out of bounds on the lawn due to positioning drift.)

Q4 Why are the number of satellites almost the same, but the RTK status on the mobile station/mower is shifting between √ and !

The mower sometimes signals a low RTK status and/or connection:  The satellites are moving in the sky, so even at the same location, the number of satellites that the RTK base station and the mower detect will differ, and the quality of the GPS signal from the different satellites may also differ. This is why the RTK status will shift with different quantities of the satellites.

Q5 What should I do if the RTK positioning along the edge is not accurate?

The mower will calibrate the current position using boundary information recognized by AI.
