RoboUP Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of an R&D Engineer

Kira X. - 2025/04/10

The Morning Started Like Any Other

As an R&D engineer at RoboUP, my job is full of challenges and opportunities. Each day brings something new, whether it's a design issue, a technical challenge, or a breakthrough in developing our robot mower. There's a certain rhythm to our work, a sense of progress that drives us forward.

On this particular day, I was feeling confident about our latest project, a new robot mower model. It was performing well in initial tests, and we were wrapping up the final stage of testing before preparing for an official launch. I was optimistic that we were on track, but things, as they often do in R&D, took an unexpected turn…

Uh-Oh, Something's Not Right with the Robot Mower

We were just finishing up the last round of testing on the new product when suddenly, we hit a roadblock. The robot mower, which had been operating flawlessly up until that point, started malfunctioning in an unexpected way… The navigation system began glitching. It was taking wrong turns and couldn't even find the Charging Station. This wasn't a minor issue, it was a major disruption that halted all progress. So what now? First I took a deep breath…

It's time to solve the problem.

The Hunt for Answers Begins

Our next step was clear, we needed to figure out what had gone wrong. We quickly gathered the team for a brainstorming session. Was it the software? Could it be a hardware malfunction? Or, perhaps, there was something wrong with the integration between the two?

I focused on the software side, diving deep into the recent updates we had made to the path-planning algorithm for the robot mower. I reviewed the most recent code updates and looked for any changes that might have introduced the glitch. After hours of combing through the code, we identified a small but crucial update that appeared to be causing the problem. We immediately started running simulations to confirm our hypothesis.

At the same time, the hardware team was busy checking the physical components of the robot mower, such as the sensors, GPS systems, motors, and batteries, hoping to rule out any malfunctions on that side. This process was thorough, as even the smallest sensor failure could affect the mower's performance. After an exhaustive investigation, we discovered the issue, a synchronization problem between the new software and the hardware. It wasn't a hardware failure, nor was it a simple software bug, it was an issue where the two systems were no longer communicating properly.

Problem Solved, Mission Accomplished

With the issue identified, we sprang into action. The software team quickly adjusted the code to ensure compatibility with the hardware. We conducted multiple rounds of testing to ensure that the fix worked. Once we were confident that everything was back in sync, we put the robot mower through a series of rigorous tests, testing its navigation and charging capabilities in various scenarios. It was a nerve-wracking moment, but we were hopeful.

By the end of the day, we had fixed the problem. The prototype was back on track, it was navigating with precision, avoiding obstacles, and returning to its Charging Station seamlessly. The feeling of relief in the team was palpable, we had solved the issue, and our work had paid off. Take a look at our progress on our Official RoboUP Website, RoboUP Store and Amazon Store. Our sweat and tears weren't for nothing!

Fortunately, our efforts weren't in vain, and now we're eager to share all the exciting progress we've made. Here's the best part, you'll get an exclusive look at the latest robot mower developments during our RoboUP online launch event on 17/04! Don't miss out on seeing the hard work of our R&D team come to life.
